Waldo County's court system, headquartered in Belfast, Maine, handles a wide range of legal proceedings — from felony prosecutions to estate administration. The official records these proceedings produce (dockets, motions, judgments, decrees, affidavits, exhibits, and registries of actions) are collectively defined as court records under the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS), which distinguish them from hearing transcripts, available through a separate process. Where records are kept, who holds them, and how to request them all depend on which court handled the case and when — Maine's shift from paper to electronic recordkeeping is still ongoing, so the answer isn't always the same.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Waldo County?
Maine residents and out-of-state parties have several practical options. The Maine Judicial Branch is the official starting point, and MaineCourts.us can help you navigate Maine's court divisions, find clerk offices, and understand what case data may be available remotely. Where electronic filing has been implemented, the re:SearchMaine platform lets any registered member of the public search public case records and view registries of actions at no charge. For older, paper-based cases, your most reliable path is a formal records request to the Judicial Branch Service Center or a direct visit to the courthouse where the case was heard.
Are Court Records Public in Waldo County?
Court records in Waldo County are generally presumed open to the public — but access is governed by judicial rules, not the Maine Freedom of Access Act (FOAA), which covers executive branch records. The Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03 together define three tiers of access: records available only to attorneys of record and parties, records available to the public remotely, and records accessible to the public only in person at a courthouse where eFiling has been implemented.
Several categories of cases and documents are classified as nonpublic or confidential and cannot be accessed without a court order or demonstrated legal standing. These include:
- Records that have been sealed or impounded by a judge
- Personally identifying information such as residential addresses, telephone numbers, financial account numbers, and personal email addresses
- Mental health civil commitment proceedings and HIV/AIDS testing proceedings
- Sterilization proceedings and proceedings for extreme weapon protection orders
- Medical malpractice screening panel proceedings
- Guardianships of minors and minor settlement proceedings
- Child protection matters and petitions for court-authorized abortions for minors
- Adoptions and records relating to assisted reproduction matters
- Emancipations of minors and name changes for minors
- Most juvenile case records
If you believe you have a legal basis to access restricted records, you can file a motion for access under the applicable rules of procedure. Any access granted to nonpublic records will not be provided remotely — it requires a courthouse visit.
Waldo County Criminal Court Records
Criminal matters in Waldo County are divided between two courts. The Waldo County Superior Court handles serious felony cases, while the Belfast District Court presides over misdemeanors and lower-level criminal charges. Both sit at the same location:

You'll need to contact the Clerk's Office directly or submit a formal search request.
To request criminal case records by mail, complete the Records Search Request Form, include a self-addressed stamped envelope, and send it to:
Judicial Branch Service Center
P.O. Box 266, Lewiston, ME 04240
(For FedEx/UPS: 250 Goddard Road, Lewiston, ME 04240)
Phone: (207) 753-2901
Copy fees at the Superior and District Courts follow Administrative Order JB-05-26, which sets out the Revised Court Fees Schedule. Generally, paper copies cost $2.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page.
Keep in mind that court case records and criminal history records are two different things. Courts hold documentation tied to specific proceedings. Statewide criminal history information — which pulls conviction data, pending cases, and adjudication records from criminal justice agencies across Maine — is maintained separately by the Maine State Police's State Bureau of Identification (SBI). The SBI processes public background check requests online for $31.00 (or $21.00 for Maine InforME subscribers), payable by credit card online or by check through the mail.
Waldo County Civil Court Records
Civil cases split between the two trial court levels depending on the nature and value of the claim. The Waldo County Superior Court handles larger civil actions — personal injury torts, contract disputes, title to real estate, and constitutional or civil rights matters. The Belfast District Court covers smaller civil disputes, small claims cases, evictions (Forcible Entry and Detainer), and consumer matters.
Maine's small claims process lets plaintiffs pursue money judgments of $6,000 or less in District Court. The Maine Judicial Branch's small claims guidance explains that cases are filed in the District Court where the underlying events occurred or where the defendant resides. Filing fees follow the court's published fee schedule.
For civil case records currently in the electronic system, the public can search and view registries of actions through re:SearchMaine for case types such as personal injury torts, contract disputes, declaratory relief, 80B/80C civil appeals, and money judgments. For evictions, small claims, and foreclosures, registries of actions are publicly available after judgment only if the plaintiff prevailed. Viewing full electronic documents beyond the Registry of Actions requires a visit to a courthouse where eFiling is implemented.
Older civil case records in paper form follow the same request process as criminal records — either a clerk's office visit or a mailed Records Search Request to the Judicial Branch Service Center.
Property and land records connected to civil matters are maintained separately from the court system by the Waldo County Registry of Deeds:
Waldo County Registry of Deeds
Address: 39A Spring Street, Belfast, ME 04915
Phone: (207) 338-1710
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
The Registry's online land records search tool lets you search remotely by last name, instrument number, or book and page number for deeds, mortgages, liens, discharges, and assignments. Copy fees from the Registry are $1.00 per page, $5.00 per plan, and $2.00 per page for faxed copies.

If you need access to a protection from abuse or protection from harassment case in re:SearchMaine, submit a completed and notarized form OTH-014 by email to ecourtshelp@courts.maine.gov with the subject line "re:SearchMaine Access Request - Protection Order Case".
For vital records tied to family proceedings, Maine's Data, Research, and Vital Statistics (DRVS) office within the Department of Health and Human Services is the central statewide office. Certified copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates cost $15.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for each additional copy requested at the same time. Non-certified informational copies cost $10.00 and carry the notation "Not for Legal Purposes". You can submit requests by mail using the Application for a Vital Record form, by phone, or online through the DRVS vendor. Local city and town clerk offices in the municipality where the event was registered are also authorized to issue certified copies.
Maine is a closed-record state for vital records under a certain age. Under 22 M.R.S. 2706, birth records less than 75 years old are restricted to the registrant, their spouse, descendants, legal guardian, or a genealogist holding a valid DRVS researcher card. Marriage records less than 50 years old carry similar restrictions. Death records less than 25 years old are accessible only to legally authorized parties.

If you need help identifying a specific case or obtaining copies of probate documents, contact the Registry of Probate directly during business hours. Because many guardianship and adoption-related probate records carry confidentiality protections, you may be asked to demonstrate your legal standing before certain files are released.
