Oxford County, Maine, maintains court records across its Superior Court, two District Court locations, and its independently administered Probate Court. The Maine Judicial Branch defines court records broadly — encompassing any document, form, or exhibit that a court maintains in connection with a case. These records capture the full range of judicial activity, from criminal proceedings and civil disputes to family matters and estate administration. They serve a vital public function by making the judicial process observable and accountable, though certain case types and documents are protected from general public disclosure.
Searching for court records in Maine can be done through clerk offices, public access terminals at courthouses, the state’s eFiling system, and online databases. MaineCourts.us may be useful for locating publicly available court case information across the state’s judicial system.

Three primary methods are available for locating Oxford County court records:
- Online via re:SearchMaine: The re:SearchMaine platform provides public access to electronic case information for courts that have implemented eFiling. New users must register for an account to search and track case information. Records can be viewed and printed at the courthouse at no charge.
- By mail using a Records Search Request: For paper records — which cover most case types filed before November 2020 — complete the Records Search Request form and mail it with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Judicial Branch Service Center, P.O. Box 266, Lewiston, ME 04240 (or 250 Goddard Road, Lewiston, ME 04240 for FedEx/UPS). Questions about copies can be directed to the Service Center at (207) 753-2901. Search fees are $20 per name.
- In person at the clerk’s office: Visit the appropriate courthouse during business hours. Bring as much identifying information as possible — party name, case type, docket number, and approximate date — to help clerk staff locate the record efficiently.
Whether a record exists in paper or electronic form depends on the court location, case type, and the date the case was filed. The Judicial Branch’s Records Retention Schedule governs how long records are kept before potential destruction or transfer to the Maine State Archives.

Marriage Records
Certified copies of Oxford County marriage records are maintained at the municipal clerk’s office in the town where the marriage intentions were filed, as well as at the DRVS in Augusta. Municipal clerks typically charge $15.00 for the first certified copy and $6.00 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. For example, the Oxford Town Clerk accepts mail requests along with a completed birth or death certificate request form and proper photo identification. Walk-in service is available and accepted payment methods include cash, check, and credit card.
The DRVS holds statewide marriage records from 1892 to the present. Fees mirror those charged by municipal clerks: $15.00 per certified copy and $6.00 for additional copies. Online orders are processed through VitalChek at an additional VitalChek processing fee of $15.50 per order.
Birth and Death Records
Maine law treats birth records less than 75 years old and death records less than 25 years old as confidential. Access is restricted to the registrant (for birth records), immediate family members (spouse, parents, descendants), legal guardians, authorized legal representatives, and genealogists registered with the state. Nonconfidential records are available to anyone upon proper request.
Most Oxford County vital records are available at the local level through the municipal clerk’s office where the event occurred. The DRVS in Augusta also issues certified copies for events statewide. Required documentation includes a valid government-issued photo ID, a completed Application for a Vital Record, proof of eligibility if not listed on the record, and payment. Mail requests average 5–7 business days for processing. Do not send cash; checks and money orders must be made payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine.
Oxford County Probate Court Records
The Oxford County Probate Court, established under the Maine Constitution in 1820, is administered at the county level and operates independently from the Judicial Branch courts. Judge of Probate Jarrod S. Crockett and Register of Probate Jennifer Dilworth oversee the court, which convenes on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
The Probate Court has jurisdiction over:
- Estates and trusts — including the probate of wills and administration of estates
- Guardianship and conservatorship of incapacitated adults and minor children
- Legal name changes for adults
- Some adoption matters
The Register of Probate is authorized under Maine law to conduct informal probate proceedings — including probating a will or appointing a personal representative — without prior notice to interested persons.
Important: Not all Probate Court matters are part of the public record. Adoptions, guardianships of minors, and name changes for minors are confidential case types and are not accessible to the general public. Public probate records — such as estate filings — are available for in-person inspection at the courthouse during regular county office hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Clerk staff will ask for a name or case number to initiate a search, and applicable fees must be paid before records are released.
For guidance on probate matters statewide, the Maine Probate Court directory lists all county probate courts and contact information. Those researching genealogy or historical estate records should contact the Probate Court directly to confirm availability, as older records may be stored or organized differently from current electronic filings.
