Cumberland County is the most populous county in Maine, with Portland serving as both the county seat and the state’s largest city. The county’s court system includes the Cumberland County Superior Court, two district court locations, and a probate court — each generating and maintaining distinct categories of judicial records. Whether someone needs to verify a criminal case outcome, retrieve civil litigation filings, obtain a divorce decree, or look into a probate matter, understanding how Cumberland County organizes its courts and records is essential for an efficient search.
Residents of Maine can search for court records through several channels, including courthouse clerk offices, the statewide electronic records platform, and formal written requests to the Judicial Branch Service Center. For locating courts, checking case types, and accessing self-help resources, MaineCourts.us provides a directory of court locations, contact information, and links to electronic filing and records tools that may assist in finding publicly available case information across the state.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Cumberland County?
The method for locating a Cumberland County court case depends on when and where the case was filed and whether it exists in paper or electronic form. Maine’s Judicial Branch began transitioning to electronic court records and eFiling in 2018, starting with traffic infractions statewide. Cumberland County courts launched eFiling for most civil case types as part of this phased rollout. Records created before eFiling was available at a particular court remain in paper files.
Electronic records — re:SearchMaine
re:SearchMaine is the Judicial Branch’s online platform for accessing electronic court records in courts where eFiling is available. To use it:
- Register for a free account at re:SearchMaine.
- Search by party name or case number.
- View the Registry of Actions (ROA) — a chronological list of court events — for public cases.
- Access documents the court has made remotely available.
Members of the public can view ROA entries and certain documents online at no charge. Public access to electronic records is governed by the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03.

Are Court Records Public in Cumberland County?
Court records in Maine are generally open to the public. Under Maine’s Freedom of Access Act (Title 1, Chapter 13 of the Maine Revised Statutes), any person may inspect and obtain copies of public records held by government entities, including the courts. No written request is required by law, though written requests trigger the procedural protections and deadlines set out in the statute.
However, several categories of court records are confidential and not available to the general public. The Maine Judicial Branch identifies the following as confidential case types:
- Mental health civil commitment proceedings
- Medical malpractice screening panel proceedings
- Sterilization proceedings
- Proceedings for extreme weapon protection orders
- HIV/AIDS testing proceedings
- Minor settlement proceedings
- Child protection matters
- Adoptions
- Guardianships of minors
- Name changes for minors
- Petitions for court-authorized abortions for minors
- Emancipations of minors
- Assisted reproduction matters
- Most juvenile case records
For electronic records, MRECS creates additional access tiers. Some records are accessible only by attorneys of record and parties, some are remotely accessible by the public, and some are accessible only at a courthouse. Records that are sealed, impounded, or made nonpublic by law require a court order for access, and any such access will not be remote.
Wills deposited with the probate court and background check information ordered by the probate court in adoption proceedings are also exempt from public disclosure. Documents containing personally identifiable information and court filings exempt under state or federal statutes may likewise be withheld.
Cumberland County Criminal Court Records
Criminal cases in Cumberland County are divided between the Superior Court and the District Court. The Superior Court handles felony prosecutions, while the District Court has jurisdiction over misdemeanors and other criminal matters. Both courts operate out of the Cumberland County Courthouse at 205 Newbury Street in Portland, with the Bridgton District Court handling cases from the western part of the county.
Searching criminal court records
Criminal case records are not currently available in electronic form through re:SearchMaine for Cumberland County (electronic criminal records are being rolled out on a county-by-county basis). To search for criminal case records:
- Submit a Records Search Request form to the Judicial Branch Service Center. Check the “Criminal” box and select “Cumberland Superior & Portland District” and/or “Bridgton District” under Court Locations. Include a date of birth — it is required for criminal searches. The fee is $20 per name per court location.
- Visit the clerk’s office in person at 205 Newbury Street, Portland, or 3 Chase Street, Bridgton, during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.).
- Call the clerk’s office at (207) 822-4200 (Portland) or (207) 647-3535 (Bridgton), though some offices may not accommodate telephone requests.
Docket records — which list party names, charges, filing dates, attorney information, and judgment details — are the most commonly requested criminal court documents.
Criminal history records (rap sheets)
Criminal history records are distinct from court case records and are maintained by the Maine State Bureau of Identification (SBI), not the courts. The SBI offers two types of checks:
- Name-based checks through the online request portal — search up to ten names simultaneously. The fee is $31 per name ($21 for Maine InforME subscribers). Results are available within approximately 24 hours.
- Fingerprint-based checks — submit a completed fingerprint card to the SBI. This provides a positive identification and is the only way to confirm a match.

Cumberland County Civil Court Records
Civil matters in Cumberland County — including contract disputes, personal injury claims, real estate litigation, foreclosure, small claims, and declaratory or equitable relief — are handled by the Superior Court and the District Court. The Superior Court has jurisdiction over more complex civil cases, while the District Court handles small claims and other civil matters within its jurisdictional limits.
How to obtain civil court records:
- re:SearchMaine: For cases filed electronically in courts where eFiling is available, search re:SearchMaine by party name or case number. The Registry of Actions for many public civil case types is viewable remotely, including personal injury tort, non-personal injury tort, contract, real estate, and declaratory relief cases. For forcible entry and detainer (eviction), small claims, and foreclosure cases, the ROA becomes remotely accessible after judgment if the plaintiff prevailed.
- Records Search Request: Submit a request form to the Judicial Branch Service Center, checking the “Civil” box. Civil case searches in Maine do not collect a unique identifier such as date of birth, so the Judicial Branch cannot certify that civil search results pertain to a specific individual.
- In person: Visit the clerk’s office at 205 Newbury Street in Portland or 3 Chase Street in Bridgton. Paper files may be viewed at the courthouse during business hours. The Judicial Branch Records Retention Schedule determines how long different types of case records are kept. Older records may be stored at the Records Center of the Maine State Archives or may have been destroyed.
Property-related records that sometimes overlap with civil litigation — such as deeds, mortgages, and liens — are maintained by the Cumberland County Registry of Deeds. The Registry offers a free online search platform for viewing recorded documents. Printing and downloading incur additional fees.
Cumberland County Family Court Records
Family law cases in Cumberland County are heard by the District Court, which has jurisdiction over divorce, child custody and support, paternity, termination of parental rights, protection from abuse, and juvenile matters. Adoption cases are an exception — they fall under the Probate Court’s jurisdiction.
Confidentiality considerations
Many family-related records carry confidentiality restrictions. Child protection cases, adoptions, guardianships of minors, name changes for minors, emancipations, and most juvenile records are confidential by law and are not available to the general public. Protection from abuse cases have specific access rules under MRECS; parties who want remote access to their protection from abuse or protection from harassment cases in re:SearchMaine must submit form OTH-014 with notarization to ecourtshelp@courts.maine.gov.
Divorce records
Divorce records, including the divorce judgment (also called a divorce decree), may exist in paper or electronic form depending on when and where the case was filed. To obtain a divorce record:

- Submit a Records Search Request to the Judicial Branch Service Center for paper records.
- Request a divorce certificate from the Maine Office of Vital Records at the Department of Health and Human Services. The certificate fee is $15, with additional copies at $6 each when ordered at the same time.

Requests must include a completed vital records request form, a photocopy of a valid ID, and payment by check or money order.

Birth and death records are also available through the Office of Vital Records or local town clerks. Birth records less than 75 years old and death records less than 25 years old are classified as private and are accessible only to persons named on the record, the record subject’s spouse, offspring, parents, or legal representatives. Birth and death certificates each cost $15, with additional copies at $6 each.

Public access to probate records
Probate records are generally open to the public, with one key exception: adoption records dated after August 8, 1953 are confidential and not available for public inspection.
As of January 15, 2026, adult guardianship, conservatorship, and protective arrangement proceedings have new confidentiality rules under Maine statute 18-C §§5-308 and 5-409 and Probate Rule 92.1. The existence of such a proceeding remains a matter of public record, and court orders of appointment can be inspected and copied for a fee. However, no other documents contained in the electronic or paper file are publicly accessible. Remote online access is limited to confirming the existence of such a proceeding — documents are not viewable online by the general public.
Probate forms for estate administration, guardianship, conservatorship, and other filings are available on the MaineProbate.net forms page. For legal questions about the probate process, the court recommends consulting with an attorney, as court staff cannot provide legal advice.
