Androscoggin County is located in south-central Maine, with its county seat in Auburn and the city of Lewiston serving as home to the District Court. The county’s judicial system includes three courts: the Androscoggin County Superior Court, the Lewiston District Court, and the Androscoggin County Probate Court. Each court generates and maintains its own set of records, and the process for accessing those records depends on the court involved, the age of the case, and whether the records exist in paper or electronic form.
Court records across Maine are in the process of transitioning from paper files to electronic records through the Maine eCourts system. For Androscoggin County specifically, eFiling is now available for most case types, meaning many newer records can be searched electronically. Older records — particularly those predating November 2020 — generally remain in paper form and must be obtained through the clerk’s office or the Judicial Branch Service Center. Official clerk offices, public access terminals at courthouses, and online tools such as re:SearchMaine offer pathways for locating case information. MaineCourts.us may also help users identify publicly available court case data and connect with the appropriate court resources statewide.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Androscoggin County?
The method for looking up a court case in Androscoggin County depends on when the case was filed and what type of case it is. Maine’s court system distinguishes between paper records and electronic records, and different tools apply to each.
Electronic Records (eFiling courts, generally from November 2020 onward)
The Accessing Electronic Court Records page on the Judicial Branch website explains the three tiers of access established by the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS):
- Attorneys of record can access their case files through re:SearchMaine using their eFileMaine credentials at no charge.
- Parties to a case can view most of their electronic case records remotely after registering on re:SearchMaine and providing an email address to the court. Parties seeking access to child protection, protection from abuse, or protection from harassment cases must submit form OTH-014 with notarization to ecourtshelp@courts.maine.gov.
- Members of the public can register on re:SearchMaine (free of charge) and search for public cases to view the Registry of Actions and any documents the court has made accessible remotely. For all other publicly available electronic court documents, members of the public must visit a courthouse where eFiling is available. Paper copies of public electronic court records are available free of charge at those courthouses.
For Androscoggin County, criminal, juvenile, and civil violations records became available electronically after June 2025.

Court records fall within this framework, and most case files in Androscoggin County are accessible to the public for inspection and copying.
However, the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03 create additional rules governing electronic records. Under MRECS, certain information, documents, and entire case types are classified as “nonpublic” and restricted from public access.
The following case types are confidential by law and closed to public access, as outlined by the Maine Judicial Branch:
- Mental health civil commitment proceedings
- Medical malpractice screening panel proceedings
- Sterilization proceedings
- Proceedings for extreme weapon protection orders
- HIV/AIDS testing proceedings
- Minor settlement proceedings
- Child protection matters
- Adoptions
- Guardianships of minors
- Name changes for minors

- Emancipations of minors
- Assisted reproduction matters, including noncompliance with gestational carrier agreements
